Lithium batteries are one of the biggest threats to flight safety due to their fire risk. Please click here to read the full article as it appeared in Air Cargo Week Worldwide Flight Services (WFS) and Diagnose , a world leader in dog-handing detection, have pioneered the detection of undeclared shipments of lithium batteries following a six-month trial involving thousands of cargo consignments in France. WFS and Diagnose partnered in March 2022 to carry out a feasibility study using dogs to detect the presence of lithium batteries in cargo shipments, mail and baggage. Currently, there are few means to physically check for undeclared lithium batteries, posing one of the biggest threats to flight safety due to their fire risk. At the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) AGM in June, director general Willie Walsh, called on governments to develop and implement research methods for lithium battery detected. “Airlines, shippers, manufacturers, and governments all want to ensure the safe transport of lithium batteries by air. It’s a joint responsibility. The industry is raising the bar to consistently apply existing standards and share critical information on rogue shippers. But there are some areas where the leadership of governments is critical. Stronger enforcement of existing regulations and the criminalisation of abuses will send a strong message to rogue shippers. The accelerated development of standards for screening, information exchange, and fire containment will give the industry even more effective tools to work with,” Walsh said. WFS and Diagnose hope the results of their extensive trial in France will provide a significant step forward towards realizing this objective globally. The test phase was conducted at WFS cargo terminal in Lyon and involved two dog detection teams, specially trained by Diagnose, and their trainers. Derived from the free-running explosives detection method which Diagnosed mastered over 20 years ago, the trial enabled the dogs to check large volumes of different types of cargoes and has produced remarkable results. “Over the six months, the two dogs involved in the trial were very precise in their detection of lithium batteries, with 100% accuracy. They located both lithium ion and lithium metal phone batteries in various cargo units whose volume sometimes exceeded 2 to 3 cubic meters. More specifically, they were able to detect a single button battery (ion metal battery) within a 1 cubic meter shipment. In response to one of the biggest aviation safety challenges, WFS and Diagnose believe this can help to significantly strengthen safety measures,” David Clark, global head of health, safety, security & environment (HSSE) at WFS, said. The testing period also allowed for the development of an operational protocol, a standard training programme, and an end-of-training and ongoing performance evaluation. WFS and Diagnose, a subsidiary of the ICTS Europe group, will now make France the centre of excellence for the detection of lithium batteries by dogs. In future phases, dogs could be deployed across EU airports or in response to customer requirements within 5-6 months as more dog detection teams are trained. Diagnose is currently present in 9 countries, equipped with 400 teams of dog-handlers. “The challenge presented by lithium batteries is a major concern for aviation safety. Goods that are properly declared, correctly packed and, above all, in good condition present little risk, but it is clear that batteries, or devices containing batteries, are transported every day in passenger luggage and in airfreight shipments without being declared. By working in partnership with WFS, we believe the results of our dog detection trial can be a very important breakthrough in ensuring the highest standards of aviation safety, which are our shared priority. We will be presenting the results of our trials in France to IATA and the regulatory authorities in the next stage of this initiative,” Oren Sapir, CEO at ICTS Europe group, added. With an increase in terrorist activities and drug smugglers there has been a growing need for airports to develop their security operations. Detection dogs are quite often brought in to help detect illegal substances such as drugs and explosives. TopImgBut Why the police force use detection dogs at airports. How do detection dogs detect the substance? Detection dogs are used at airports for a number of scenarios. They sniff passengers and hand luggage at security checkpoints and if someone reports a suspicious package or incident on a plane, bomb dogs sniff the aircraft, its passengers and its cargo hatch. When the dog finds a scent, it leads the handler toward the source and the universal sit signal tells the handler that it has found something. If you’ve ever watched a sniffer dog at an airport, you may have noticed that it works in silence, with neither a word nor a bark is exchanged between the dog and its handler. What substances can detection dogs find? It’s not surprising that detection dogs are used at airports due to their ability to detect the following substances within luggage and on the person: 1. Drugs – including weed, cocaine, opium and, heroin 2. Explosives/Bombs 3. Concealed weapons and firearms 4. Illegal animal-based products 5. Large amounts of cash No matter how much the traveller tries to conceal the substance, detection dogs are trained to detect illegal odours when they are tightly sealed or deeply hidden. They can identify individual scents even when the scents are combined or masked by other odours. Why use detection dogs for airport security? There is no denying that detection dogs cannot replace humans when it comes to airport security but what they can do is provide that extra security measure. Even though humans smell using most of the same equipment as dogs, there are differences. Dogs are better than us at sucking in odours. Their noses are longer and roomier than ours, so they can inhale more air per sniff. Detection dogs also have 20-40 times more odour receptors in their noses than we do. Airports are now starting to use detection dogs to speed up security waiting times. Detection dogs and their handlers have also been known to patrol airport security lines to reduce waiting times when going through security, without having to remove their shoes, empty their bags or experience the dreaded pat downs. How are detection dogs trained? Detection dogs learn the basics in between two and four months. Although they’ll undergo testing and retraining throughout their entire careers to make sure their skills remain sharp. Detection dogs are trained to learn a sequence, they would sniff the area, find the substance, sit and get a toy for good behaviour and this would be carried out in the same surroundings as to where they would work. Dog handlers would train alongside the sniffer dogs, learning to watch and lead their canines. Detection dogs are extremely versatile Detection dogs are not only used to sniff out drugs and explosives but can also be used for a number of other operations. The UK Telegraph reported that KLM hired a sniffer dog named Sherlock to help reunite passengers with their lost mobiles and valuables. Items such as mobiles, headphones and toys were attached to the dogs back who then tears through Amsterdam Schiphol Airport in search of their rightful owners. “It’s a lot of fun. Η ενότητα Air Cargo and Mail Security καλύπτει τις θεωρητικές γνώσεις του ελέγχου ασφάλειας αεροπορικού φορτίου και ταχυδρομείου, με βάση τους κανονισμούς της ΕΕ. Περιλαμβάνει κεφάλαιο σχετικά με το καθεστώς του αεροπορικού φορτίου, τις έννοιες των εγκεκριμένων μεταφορικών γραφείων, των γνωστών και άγνωστων αποστολέων, των αεροπορικών φορτωτικών και των μεθόδων κοινοποίησης φορτίου. Η ενότητα συμμορφώνεται με τον κανονισμό 2015/1998 της ΕΕ και την απόφαση 8005/2015 της Επιτροπής. Για περισσότερα από 20 χρόνια, ενημερώνουμε τις εκδόσεις των εκπαιδευτικών μαθημάτων ακτίνων Χ για χειραποσκευές, παραδοτέες αποσκευές, φορτίο και ταχυδρομείο. Σε συνδυασμό με τις απαιτήσεις του Διεθνούς Οργανισμού Πολιτικής Αεροπορίας (ICAO) και της Διεθνούς Ένωσης Αεροπορικών Μεταφορών (IATA), βοηθούν στην απόδειξη της συμμόρφωσής σας με τους διεθνείς κανονισμούς και τα πρότυπα του κλάδου. Με εικόνες που ενημερώνονται ετησίως ώστε να αντικατοπτρίζουν τη μεταβαλλόμενη φύση των απειλών και τους εξελισσόμενους κανονισμούς ασφαλείας αεροδρομίων, τα μαθήματα σάς βοηθούν να διατηρείτε το υψηλότερο επίπεδο ικανότητας ελέγχου - μέχρι το σημείο της αρχικής εκπαίδευσης και ως μέρος της συνεχούς διαχείρισης απόδοσης. Η δομή του μαθήματος περιλαμβάνει τρεις ενότητες: Ανίχνευση απειλών/απαγορευμένων αντικειμένων Αναγνώριση καθημερινών αντικειμένων Αξιολόγηση βασισμένη στη γνώση Βασικά πλεονεκτήματα: Χειραποσκευές, έλεγχος ασφαλείας παραδιδόμενων αποσκευών και έλεγχος φορτίου είναι διαθέσιμα για έλεγχο ασφαλείας Καθώς είμαστε συνδεδεμένοι με συγκεκριμένους κατασκευαστές, η εκπαίδευσή μας μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί για ένα ευρύ φάσμα εξοπλισμού ελέγχου ακτίνων Χ Διατίθεται είτε ως αυτόνομο εργαλείο είτε ως μέρος ενός ολοκληρωμένου πακέτου Δυνατότητα μετάφρασης σε τοπικές γλώσσες. Προσομοιωτής εκπαίδευσης ακτινών Χ. Ο προσομοιωτής διαθέτει περισσότερες από 30.000 γνήσιες εικόνες ακτίνων Χ καθημερινών και απειλητικών αντικειμένων μέσα σε αποσκευές και φορτία, εκ των οποίων οι 6.400 είναι εικόνες φορτίου / ταχυδρομείου. Όλες οι εικόνες ελήφθησαν σε πραγματικά μηχανήματα ακτίνων Χ από ειδικούς της ICTS Hellas. Είναι κατάλληλο για βασική εκπαίδευση, επαναλαμβανόμενη εκπαίδευση και πιστοποίηση προσφέροντας εικόνες μίας και διπλής προβολής των αντικειμένων που απαγορεύονται βάσει του κανονισμού της ΕΕ, όπως: εύφλεκτους, εκρηκτικούς και αυτοσχέδιους εκρηκτικούς μηχανισμούς, πυρομαχικά, πυροβόλα όπλα και μέρη πυροβόλων όπλων, αιχμηρά αντικείμενα, επικίνδυνα εμπορεύματα, με θανατηφόρα όπλα όπως όπλα taser και σπρέι πιπεριού, αμβλύ όργανα, εργαλεία εργαζομένων, μεγάλα ηλεκτρικά είδη, Κρυμμένα και αυτοσχέδια όπλα.
